ADI PART 1 - BAND 2 EXPLAINED
ADI Part 1 Band 2: Traffic Signs and Signals
This section tests your knowledge of the visual language of the road—those critical signs, markings, signals, and instructions that every driver must recognise and respond to correctly.
But as an instructor, you're not just expected to know them. You’re expected to be able to teach them.
What’s Covered in Band 2?
Here’s a breakdown of the key areas you need to master:
1️⃣ Traffic Signs
You’ll be tested on:
-
Warning signs (triangular): e.g. bends, crossings, merging lanes
-
Regulatory signs (circular): e.g. speed limits, no entry, turn restrictions
-
Information signs (rectangular): e.g. directions, lane usage, motorway services
-
Temporary signs (roadworks, diversions, etc.)
🧠 Why it matters:
A driving instructor must help pupils read signs quickly and accurately, explaining what they mean and how to respond—on the move.
2️⃣ Traffic Signals
This includes:
-
Standard traffic lights and filter arrows
-
Flashing amber at pelican crossings
- Lane control signals
- Motorway and smart motorway signals
- Pedestrian and controlled crossing signals (Pelican, Puffin, Toucan, Pegasus)
🧠 Why it matters:
Pupils need to understand not only what a green light means, but when it’s safe to move, and how to anticipate changes. You need to coach that judgement.
3️⃣ Road Markings
This includes:
- White lines: solid and broken, lane dividers, hazard warnings
- Yellow lines: parking restrictions (single and double)
- Zig-zags, box junctions, bus lanes
- Cycle lane markings
🧠 Why it matters:
Markings guide everything on the road—and misreading them can lead to test fails or worse. You’ll be expected to explain what these mean on the spot to pupils.
4️⃣ Signals by Police, Traffic Officers, and Others
You’ll need to know:
- Arm signals from police and authorised persons
- Hand signals from other road users (cyclists, horse riders)
- How to respond correctly to emergency vehicle signals
🧠 Why it matters:
This is about situational awareness—helping pupils understand who has authority and how to respond when things aren’t controlled by traffic lights.
Why Band 2 Is Essential for ADIs
While Band 1 focuses on road procedure, Band 2 ensures that you—and your pupils—can interpret the language of the road.
Failing to teach signs and signals properly leads to:
- Test fails
- Hazardous driving
- Poor decision-making
As a future instructor, you’ll need to spot confusion in your pupil and correct it before it becomes a risk.
